Jay Bowman is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, a member of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists, a Fellow of both the International and the American College of Dentists, Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy International Honor Organization, Fellow of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Member of the Faculty of Dental Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a Charter Member of the World Federation of Orthodontists, and is a Regent of the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation.
He developed and has taught the Straightwire Typodont & Techniques course at The University of Michigan for over 20 years, is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Saint Louis University, an Assistant Clinical Professor at Case Western Reserve University, a Visiting Clinical Lecturer at Seton Hill University and Milton Sims Visiting Professor at the University of Adelaide, Australia.
He delivered the J.A. Salzmann Lecture at the AAO in 2022, received the Angle Research Award in 2000, the Alumni Merit Award from Saint Louis University in 2005, the Orthodontic Education and Research Foundation Merit Award in 2017 and the Edgar Honey Award in 2020. He was 1 of 4 on the Invisalign Teen Research Team.
Jay has been a Guest Editor for Seminars in Orthodontics, a Contributing Editor or on the Editorial Board for the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, Angle Orthodontist, Seminars in Orthodontics, Orthodontics: The Art and Science of Dentofacial Enhancement, Hellenic Orthodontic Journal, a reviewer for European Journal of Orthodontics, and a member of the Editorial Advisor Board for Orthodontic Products, Orthodontic Practice US, OrthoTribune.
He is co-author/editor of the book: Mini-Implants in Orthodontics: Innovative Anchorage Concepts. Jay has used over 6000 miniscrews of 17 different types. He had 2 U.S. Patents, over 165 articles published, contributed to 20 book chapters, and has given over 300 lectures in 40 U.S. States and 36 countries on 6 continents.
Among other events, he has spoken at the 100th Annual Session of the AAO (along with the 108th,111-114, 116-118th, and 121st and 122nd), the 45th, 50th, 53rd, 55th, 59th Orthodontic Education and Research Foundations, 60th Anniversaries of the Texas and the Arizona Orthodontic Study Clubs, the 1st Annual meeting of the Journal of the Indian Orthodontic Society, South African Society of Orthodontists, twice for the Greater New York Dental Meeting, twice for British Orthodontic Society, twice for the American Dental Association, 4 times for the Australian Orthodontic Society, twice for the Singapore Association of Orthodontists, three times for the World Implant Conference, along with 15 “named” memorial lectures. He lectured for the American, Canadian, and Mexican Association of Orthodontists meetings in 2009 and the World Federation of Orthodontists in 2010 and 2015.
Jay has developed a number of orthodontic product concepts, including: the Butterfly Bracket System and v-slot auxiliaries, several TAD-based auxiliaries, Class II Combination Therapy, Bowman Modification and Horseshoe Jet (Distal Jet), Bowman Consolidator, Duralight Retention Material, Hu-Friedy Clear Collection of 9 instruments for aligners, Monkey Hook and Kilroy Spring for impacted teeth, Dentsply Aligner Chewies and Retainer Retrievers for clear aligners, WYRED cheek retractor, Double-Up, Quick Fix with SideSwipe, etc. Jay’s lectures are fast-paced, colorful, and entertaining and, as a result, he has been invited to return to lecture again by many organizations.
Finally, Jay was most thrilled with the unique opportunity to play keyboards on stage with the iconic rock band, Los Lobos, during their 40th Anniversary Tour.
